Imagine your alarm clock rings like it does every morning! Blinking, you open your eyes, switch off the annoying device and look out of the window in your bedroom. Outside, thick clouds of fog and smog drift by, looking like prophets of doom against the dark background. The ice crystals on the edges promise a bone-chilling cold. But instead of pulling the comforter back over your head, you swing out of bed, feel the energy in your limbs and face the day with an inner smile.
Why do we often suffer from a vitamin D deficiency in winter?
Especially in the cold and dark season, we tend to feel tired and listless quickly. From a conventional medical point of view, this is often due to a vitamin D deficiency.
Because people spend far less time outdoors in winter, they also absorb less of the important sun vitamin. Unlike the other essential vitamins, the vitamin can be produced by the body itself. In principle, all it needs for this is regular contact of your skin with UVA and UVB radiation in the warm season.
Foods such as fish, meat, dairy products and mushrooms also contain the essential vitamin and can help us to obtain it.
Nevertheless, many people suffer from a deficiency – and not just in winter. This is because unhealthy lifestyle habits, stress and overexertion can increase the need and deplete stores more quickly.
The effects of vitamin D deficiency: psyche and body in imbalance
A vitamin D deficiency may seem harmless at first glance, but the effects on the body and mind should not be underestimated.
Especially when it comes to the health of your psyche, you should avoid prolonged low vitamin D levels at all costs. Low vitamin D levels can lead to
- depressive moods,
- listlessness and
- chronic fatigue.
This is because vitamin D is closely linked to the production of serotonin, the so-called happiness hormone. A low vitamin D level can therefore lead to an increased risk of mood swings and even serious mental illness in the long term.
The body is also dependent on a good supply of vitamin D. This is because the fat-soluble vitamin plays a key role in numerous physiological processes. For example, it supports the absorption of calcium and phosphate from food and thus the health of bones, muscles and teeth.
What can you do about the symptoms caused by a vitamin D deficiency?
To avoid the negative consequences, you should make sure that your vitamin D level is constantly between 30 and 50 nanograms per milliliter of blood. You can achieve this by ingesting 20 micrograms a day through your skin or food. In particularly challenging times, however, your vitamin D requirement can also increase.
A simple solution is to take vitamin D supplements, which quickly provide you with the vitamin you need. You can also specifically help your body to absorb enough vitamin D in spring and summer and store it for the winter.
This is because a full vitamin D store can provide you with the mood-enhancing vitamin for at least six months. Ayurveda therefore takes a holistic approach.

Sufficient vitamin D through detox
Your possible key to more balance and a healthy vitamin D balance is here: Detox.
Regular detoxification cures offer you the perfect opportunity to cleanse your body and optimally prepare it to obtain and store sufficient vitamin D. After all, a healthy metabolism and a well-functioning immune system are essential for absorbing and storing the vitamin you need and benefiting from its positive effects during the winter months.
Low vitamin D levels are often caused by stress, an unhealthy lifestyle and the accumulation of toxins in the body. These factors can impair your body’s ability to produce and store vitamin D effectively. Regular internal cleansing, as offered by our Holistic Ayurveda detox cures, supports your body and mind balance and can also positively influence your ability to absorb important nutrients such as vitamin D.
The combination of Ayurvedic detox nutrition, gentle exercise, meditation and traditional treatments can reorganize the body’s self-regulatory powers, break down excess toxins and optimize the body’s own vitamin D synthesis.
