Relieving headaches through meditation – how it can work

What if there was a way to relieve the bad headaches that are pulling the rug out from under you and preventing you from enjoying your life? A way that doesn’t require medication or expensive treatments from a specialist, just your own commitment and a little time? This path is called meditation.

Why can meditation have a soothing effect on headaches?

Meditation is much more than just sitting quietly and breathing. Think of meditation as a gift! A gift you can give yourself, because it offers you a way to calm your mind, balance your body and bring more peace and joy to your life.
Stress is one of the most common triggers for headaches and migraines. This is exactly where meditation comes in. If you meditate regularly, you can learn to control your stress reactions and calm your nervous system in a targeted manner. As a result, you can not only reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches, but also improve your general well-being.
Meditation can also influence the activity in certain parts of your brain that control pain perception and emotions. By meditating regularly, you give these brain regions more importance and make them more resistant to pain signals. This effect has been investigated in various scientific studies. The American Migraine Foundation published its findings in the journal “Headache” back in 2014.

Which meditation can you use to relieve headaches?

Meditation has many faces. There are an incredible number of types of mindfulness exercises. In addition to silent meditation while sitting, there are also active meditations such as

  • yoga,
  • chi gong,
  • walking meditation or
  • progressive muscle relaxation.

Which type of meditation suits you best is not just a question of type from an Ayurvedic perspective.
Passive Zen meditation is very difficult, especially at the beginning, and is not really suitable for most types to relieve headaches.
We therefore recommend spiritual meditation and mantra meditation, which are an essential part of our yoga retreats. A mantra is a phrase that you recite to yourself over and over again during meditation. Possible mantras for headaches include “I’m fine” or “I’m finding my center and inner peace more and more”.
Guided meditation in a group can also make it easier for you to start meditating.

Meditation

What should you bear in mind when meditating?

Meditation can be a very powerful technique. However, to get the most out of it, there are a few things you should bear in mind.
– It is particularly important that you meditate regularly. Create a daily routine by meditating at the same time every day! You should also be patient and not expect an instant miracle cure. The positive effects of meditation build up over time. So be patient and consistent in your practice!
– Create a quiet and distraction-free environment in which to meditate. It is also best to switch off your cell phone and inform friends and family that you cannot be reached during this time!
You can experience complete peace and quiet in our meditation courses as part of a yoga retreat. Here you are guaranteed to be able to switch off and concentrate fully on learning the new meditation techniques properly. Practicing in a group also helps you to stay motivated.
At the Mandira Ayurveda Resort, we not only offer you excellent courses that can help you to deepen your meditation practice and effectively relieve headaches, but also provide you with a high-quality, type-appropriate diet.
