Imagine waking up in the morning full of energy, your mind is clear, your body feels light and a deep sense of balance accompanies you throughout the day. Nothing can throw you off track and you can tackle all your tasks with enthusiasm.
In today’s often hectic world, this state seems almost unattainable. But Ayurvedic medicine shows us that it doesn’t have to be just a dream. According to Ayurvedic teachings, true health is not merely the absence of illness, lack of energy and anxiety.
Rather, it is a harmonious interplay of body, mind and soul that can be achieved through a conscious lifestyle, targeted nutrition and customized Ayurvedic treatments.
The traditional teachings of Ayurvedic medicine
The foundation of Ayurvedic teaching is the holistic view of the human being as a unity of body, mind and soul. These entities interact with each other and therefore influence each other. If the soul suffers, for example, this is also felt on a physical and mental level.
The idea that every person has a unique constitution, which is determined by the three bioenergies – Vata, Pitta and Kapha – also plays an important role. These doshas regulate all physiological and psychological processes in the body and can in turn be placed in a universal context with the cosmos:
Vata (air and ether) stands for movement, creativity and the nervous system. It regulates breathing, blood circulation and the mind. An imbalance can lead to anxiety, difficulty sleeping or digestive problems.
Pitta (fire and water) is the energy of transformation. It represents metabolism, digestion and intellect. If it is elevated, skin problems or irritability can arise.
Kapha (earth and water) embodies stability and resistance. It gives the body structure, regulates the immune system and ensures inner peace. An excess, however, can cause sluggishness, obesity or respiratory problems.
In Ayurveda, a balance of the doshas is considered essential for well-being.
The art of Ayurvedic medicine therefore consists of bringing these energies back into balance. Ayurvedic treatments such as detoxification cures (Panchakarma), balancing herbal therapies and massages, exercise, relaxation techniques and dietary adjustments play an important role in this.
What makes Ayurvedic medicine so special?
While conventional medicine focuses on the rapid treatment of individual symptoms through diagnostics, laboratory values and standardized medication, Ayurveda pursues a profound, holistic approach.
It is not the symptom, but the causes that should be recognized and treated with Ayurvedic therapy. The aim is to keep people healthy for the long term.
This can all be illustrated with a simple example: Instead of prescribing painkillers for recurring headaches, Ayurveda therapy examines which factors are causing the imbalance and therefore the problems. Are stress or digestive problems the trigger? Is your vata dosha too high because you are traveling too much and eating irregularly? Or does your Pitta dominate because inner tension and overwork are putting a strain on your nervous system?
Only when the causes have been determined will an individual Ayurveda therapy be worked out with the Ayurveda doctor. No two people are the same. So why should everyone receive the same therapy?
